The core of Herbert House’s philosophy is about emphasizing both communal support and personal responsibility while pursuing a solid individual recovery plan. It has been our experience that the best chance at creating a community intent on forging sustainable new sober habits while reclaiming the successful aspects of their lives before addiction became unmanageable is to reserve places for mature adult males, either professionals or those still pursuing their education. Our semi-structured environment, which requires two mandatory meetings, minimal house chores, on-site and laboratory drug testing, written self-evaluations, a sign-in/out board and a nightly curfew, still leaves ample room for individuality and a personalized recovery plan. A man’s ability to fulfill and maintain his obligations is essential to his recovery. We allow the flexibility to meet those responsibilities, be they work, family or extracurricular. Herbert House observes liberal curfews; overnight and long-term passes are also issued following 24-hour written request. These policies are intended to encourage growth and personal responsibility while still maintaining the balance and integrity of each resident’s individual recovery program. Herbert House does not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to recovery. Our guests are encouraged to explore and create their own plan, which we will then support and nurture to help it take root. While we do host a weekly open men’s stag AA meeting every Thursday and believe in the potency of the twelve-step approach, we are also fully supportive of alternative recovery modalities and are convinced that the best personal programs are often a mix of various approaches. Residents of Herbert House pursue Smart Recovery, Matrix-model, CBT, Agape, psychotherapy, psychiatry, and numerous other solutions. Southern California has long been a worldwide leader in developing and implementing addiction and recovery services. The concept of full-service sober living and transitional housing first began to take root here in the Los Angeles area in the mid-1990s. Many licensed and experienced treatment professionals came to agree that proceeding to the supportive structure provided at sober living residences following inpatient treatment represented a substantial benefit to the achievement of long-term, quality sobriety. Since its founding in 1996, Herbert House Recovery Support Residence has been at the forefront of this revolution in the approach to addiction recovery support. Based upon decades of practical recovery experience, we have outlined a semi-structured, “real-life” approach to early sobriety that has shown much promise in reducing the prodigious rate of relapse among those struggling with substance abuse, alcoholism and process addictions. Over the years, the Herbert House approach has been adopted as a model by others and recognized by The Southern California Sober Living Coalition, a non-profit oversight committee representing nearly every qualified transitional recovery residence throughout Southern California.
